Weekend Happenings

Last Saturday, Nirro brought his neighborhood pals (Jasper and Carlo) to Mayon. He showed them his pokemon collections and played there. They also watched cartoons and played pokemon on the internet. I also played with them! I actually find it amusing that my new found pals are aged below ten (10) years old! =)

Oh yeah, they took almost every pokemon from the shelf... which I had to return at night. =)

Asthma irritants: mites, thunderstorms etc.

Below is an article I read in Inquirer.Net about asthma. I am posting it here as you all know, our dear Nirro is asthmatic. This is good information as it is the season of rains and all that here in Manila. It is also useful information to others who may chance upon this blog...

Asthma irritants: mites, thunderstorms etc.

MANILA, Philippines -- House dust mites are common triggers of asthma attacks. They are microscopic creatures that inhabit beddings, pillows, curtains and carpets, or wherever warm and humid. They feed on humans’ dead skin, which our body continually shed off.

Dust mites are also easily inhaled, and when this happens, they can irritate the respiratory passages. Members of the Philippine College of Chest Physicians (PCCP) warn the public that the more overcrowded a house is, the higher the risk of asthma attacks among the inhabitants.

Doctors have observed that in Metro Manila, it is not unusual for 10 or more people to share a two-bedroom house. The Philippine College of Physicians-Zuellig Foundation health forum was held recently in Quezon City.

To get rid of dust mites, Dr. Dina V. Diaz of the PCCP suggests washing linens in very hot water, or putting mattresses out in the sun.

Molds can also be asthma triggers, Diaz says. Basements or bathrooms, or any dark and poorly ventilated room in the house, can develop molds, especially during this time of the year when rains alternate with hot, humid weather.

Thunderstorms

And is there a link between thunderstorms and asthma attacks? Asthmatics can test this for themselves. But if you ask PCCP members, there most probably is.

Diaz, past chair of the PCCP’s Council on Asthma, cites a study showing thunderstorms being correlated with pollen count levels, pollutants like sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxide and also fungal levels.

“The interesting part (of the study) is that it noted that consultations for asthma attacks—whether in the emergency room or unscheduled visits to the doctor’s clinic—increased dramatically six hours after a thunderstorm,” she says.

Diaz was not able to ascertain from the study, however, if asthma attacks increased during the thunderstorms. According to her, duplicating the study in a local setting would not be so simple.

“It’s not easy to conduct pollen, pollutant and fungus counts here in the Philippines,” Diaz says.

Several US and UK studies support the existence of “thunderstorm asthma.”

Advice

Just the same, Diaz advises asthmatics to follow the old adage: Stay indoors when there’s a thunderstorm, “not so much because of the rain, but because something about the storm causes asthma attacks.”

“(It might be) imbalanced electrical ions causing more particulates to be suspended (in the air). When you’re out in the open, you inhale more of these particulates, and that may cause the attack,” she says.

Look at how cute Nirro is during his baby days!!! We hope he will be this "healthy" again soon!

The past week, classes have been suspended and so the weekend has been sort of a vacation time for these kids... Here's a picture of Nirro, who just woke up from his afternoon nap, with his pals from the neighborhood

Stormy Day

Even if the storm "EGAY" is leaving the country, rains have been pouring over the metro. And today, classes have been suspended again. However, since it was Nirro's exam week, today was already declared their "free day" as of Wednesday. So here I am with him, at their house as he plays "PS2"with his neighborhood friend Jasper.

No photos to post as I left the digicam at home. Went here to bring his new "pokemon" toy which I bought at a nearby store at home. Needless to state, I am "stranded" here at their place, not because of the flood but because Nirro does not want me to go home. How sweet! hehehe.

Yesterday, Nirro was again complaining of his tootache which got worse as it became swollen. We went to visit a dentist yesterday who prescribed antibiotics and told Nirro that she would have to take out that tooth in time. =(

His face is still swollen but he feels better somehow. His lolo and lola misses him today. =)

A Typical Day of Nirro Opoy

Nirro has been studying the past week for his exams, the first grading period. And today was his last day. Hurray! Manila has been hit by storm as well and so these are times you feel good staying indoors. And we're just glad that Nirro is here with us. Below are snapshots of a typical afternoon Nirro spends in "Barangay Mayon". =)

Sunday Snapshots!

Last Sunday, Tita Joan, Tito Rollie, Mimoy Joro and I picked Nirro up to attend mass with us at 9am. Afterwhich, we had brunch at Jollibee. =) Too bad we didn't bring any camera so we could have had snapshots of that morning.

After that sumptuous brunch, we went back to Mayon where the kids played a little and I read the Sunday paper. Imagine my surprise when Nirro noticed the "Sunday comics" page, borrowed it and started reading! I know he could already read, but I guess it just caught me off guard seeing him read that way. ANd so, I took some photos so you will know what I'm talking about....

August's 1st Week Updates

There is not so much to post here, in particular no photos as Nirro visited his lolo and lola's place just this Saturday. I guess that's part of his phase growing up.

Though he did go here yesterday, he asked to be brought home soon because his Ate Agee, Jerriel and Panchang (Jerome's Kids) were in Batangas. With no kids to play with, he just got a little bored.

Oh by the way, remember the pokemons up for sale? I brought it to their house weeks ago and what do you know? He was able to sell five (5) pokemons to his classmates Aaron, who bought two (2) and Jericho, Chester and another one I forgot the name who each bought a piece! Though I don't know if he was kidding me that he only sold them for One (1) Peso/Piece! hehehe...

What was noteworthy was the fact that as young as he is, he's got entrepreneurial skills. For the record, it was him who gave me the idea to sell the excess pokemons we have. You know, those are characters he already has in his collections. One day, he told me that he told his classmate we have pokemons to sell. That happened even before the day we tried selling ICE Candy and stuff here in the garage.

To my delight, he told me over the phone last week that he will bring five pokemons to school and yesterday, he said they were already sold! hahaha.

We did miss him though for the days he didn't drop by here. If he has playmates there in their neighborhood, you can't compete with that. At any rate, whatever makes him happy. =)
